The Rubber Wellies

Another popular re-booking for Southwell.
The Rubber Wellies (formerly Harry Bird and the Rubber Wellies) play their third Gate to Southwell.

“Songwriting genius… a masterclass in contemporary roots music” – Sean McGhee, R2 magazine

Original, entertaining and thought provoking, the Rubber Wellies are a travelling folk outfit like few others. Based in the Basque Country, Ireland and UK they are a touring collective skippered by singer-songwriter and circus musician Harry Bird and multi-instrumentalist and composer Christophe Capewell.

With three albums under their belts and over eight years of experience together on the road they have entertained audiences all over Europe and beyond with a fiercely independent work ethic that proves that you can make a living as a musician without first having to persue the straight-jacket fame offered by certain televised talent contests!

Drawing on narratives from curious everyday occurances, global politics and folk legends, the Rubber Wellies multi-lingual performances are a mix of musical story-telling, good-time sing-alongs and fun-filled crowd participation that flip between poignant introspection and carefree raucousness. In a mash-up of styles including sea shanties, mexican rancheras, bossa nova, reggae, old time and swing, their approaches to writing and performance coincide in the attempt to build bridges – in terms of stories, between their own personal experiences and those of others and, on stage, in terms of a (sonic/emotional) conversation between the band and the audience – with plenty of scope for laughter.
